Are my temperature and humidity levels in my areas too high? Too low? Why is it important? Could it be unsafe? I never thought about that!
Knowing your temperature and humidity levels is extremely important for overall health and safety and favorable outcomes for countless number of applications. The Triplett RHT415 offers more than any other monitor than most on the market at its price point and let me tell you why …
The term most often used to define the amount of water vapor in the air is “relative humidity.” Relative humidity is the percentage of water vapor in the air at a specific temperature; compared to the amount of water vapor the air is capable of holding at that temperature. Warm air holds more water vapor than cold air. When air at a certain temperature contains all the water vapor it can hold at that temperature, its relative humidity is 100 percent. If it contains only half the water vapor it is capable of holding at that temperature, the relative humidity is 50 percent.
Controlling the humidity levels in your home greatly influences the comfort you will experience as well as save you energy and reduce maintenance. Your home will feel most comfortable at humidity levels between 30 - 50%. We need humidity for our comfort and health but too much or too little can produce many difficulties.
Humidity too high? When the temperatures warm up outside you can experience too much humidity in your home. Too much humidity can cause condensation on windows, wet stains on walls and ceilings, moldy bathrooms, musty odor, and/or clammy feel to the air. Rot and structural damage can also result from extended periods of high humidity in your home. And, especially in the South, it can draw pests. Always looking for water, condensation provides bugs with the water they need.
High humidity can be especially dangerous when combined with high temperatures, as it will disrupt the body’s ability to cool itself, which may lead to heat stroke. People with heart problems or asthma are advised to be extremely careful during such conditions. Drier air provides comfort at higher temperatures, so homeowners can raise the setting on their central air conditioners thereby reducing their energy use.
High humidity can even trigger allergic reactions, contribute to ongoing allergies, and dust mite problems. High humidity makes it easier for molds to reproduce and they can appear virtually anywhere, damaging whatever they grow upon. Mold spores pose a threat for allergy and asthma sufferers. Dust mites will thrive when the humidity is high. Present in almost every home, these tiny pests are yet another nuisance for people with allergies and asthma.
Humidity too low? When the temperature outside falls, your furnace runs more. In extreme cold conditions, your home humidity level can drop as low as 10 percent. By comparison, the Sahara Desert has an average relative humidity of 25 percent. When you consider that people generally are most comfortable when the relative humidity is approximately 40 percent, you can see how dry indoor air can take a toll on your family.
Low humidity causes static electricity, dry skin, lips and hair, scratchy throats and noses, and itching and chapping. Mucous membranes in nose and throat dry out, increasing your discomfort and susceptibility to colds and respiratory illness. With low humidity levels, body moisture evaporates so quickly that you feel chilled even at higher thermostat settings.
Your home suffers, too. Low humidity can cause havoc with woodwork and furniture. You’ll notice shrinkage, hardwood floor separation and warping, your piano will go out of tune, wallpaper peels at the edges, drawers loosen and molding gaps start to appear.
Why the Triplett RHT415? The RHT415 does not only simultaneously display Humidity (0 to 99%RH) and Temperature (14 to 140°/-10 to 60°C) in actual numeric readings but it also gives you a “quick” indicator feature by providing a color-coded bar-graph that indicates Dry/Comfortable/Wet conditions. It can be placed on a flat surface using its built-in stand or wall mounted in labs, green houses, cleanrooms, warehouses, museums, offices, schools, homes, and virtually anywhere indoor humidity and temperature have to be monitored. Includes built-in stand, remote sensor with 5ft (1.5m) cable.
Traceable Calibration to N.I.S.T. Option
And last but certainly not least…the RHT415 is one of the only low cost monitors that is adjustable so what this means is that it can, as an option, be ordered with a NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate!
So that’s it in a nutshell, the good, the bad and the ugly of temp and humidity levels and how having a RHT415 can help you keep comfortable, healthy and safe and take action when the conditions may not be up to par!
